Recruiting
Recruiting our Home Base
While our recruiting will be very broad in scope, we must and will be strong recruiting our local area: Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Maryland, DC and New England. Nothing slips through the cracks in our region. We will know every player and coach in the area!
Early ID / Academic “Coaching”
In addition to traditional scouting reports, and our network of high school and AAU coaches/trainers, we will use the easily accessed social media pages of potential recruits, usually Twitter, to identify every scholarship recruit (D1 or D2 offers) in the country. By identifying these recruits early, we can help guide and “coach” them academically to ensure they reach our academic standards here at Penn, as well as Division I eligibility requirements. This will allow us to widen our pool of recruitable student-athletes, while developing trust and relationships in the recruiting process.
International Recruiting
To climb the ladder in the standings, we will also have to recruit in areas that our competitors aren’t. Europe, specifically the UK, plus Canada, are places we can tap into our network to find high-level, under-recruited players.
HIGH UPSIDE RECRUITING
We will take calculated risks in recruiting high upside prospects in each recruiting class. We’ll look closely at each recruit’s date of birth, their time spent with the game of basketball and their recent / late growth in addition to their family genetics.
Transfer Portal
Penn is uniquely positioned relative to its Ivy League peers for success in the transfer portal. Our staff will have prior relationships with nearly all of the transfer targets in the portal, as well as their AAU and high school coaches. We will be thorough in the vetting process and selective in recruiting high impact transfers.
Staff Collaboration
The coaches on our staff will not have territories and will not consider recruits to be “their guys”. Each recruiting assistant will be involved in relationship building and both character and basketball evaluations.
